The story behind
During the Cold War, Denmark was one of the most strategically important areas in Northern Europe, and Danish waters were a key factor in both NATO and the Warsaw Pact military plans. One of the greatest threats during this period were the Soviet nuclear submarines, including the Typhoon class, which were among the largest and most fearsome submarines ever built. The last of these Cold War giants, Dmitry Donskoy, was designed to operate unseen in the oceans, and its missile systems could wipe out entire cities with a single strike.
The Dmitry Donskoy was equipped with up to 20 ballistic missiles, which could hit targets with precision, and its nuclear-powered engine allowed it to remain underwater for months at a time, almost impossible to detect. Until its deactivation in 2023, the submarine was a symbol of Cold War nuclear power and a reminder of the constant threat that Denmark and the rest of Northern Europe were under. Today, the Dmitry Donskoy remains a potentially dangerous threat, and its position in Danish waters is a reminder of the dramatic tasks that NATO must handle to prevent global catastrophe.
